Sun Siyam Resort’s seaplanes are a tribute to Maldivian Heritage
Sun Siyam Resorts’ exclusive seaplanes are a stunning homage to Maldivian culture and craftsmanship. Operated by Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), these aircraft are a beautiful representation of the Maldives culture, offering guests a taste of luxury and authenticity from the moment they arrive.
The custom-painted DHC-6 Twin Otter seaplanes are crafted in collaboration with TMA’s engineering team and are exclusively dedicated to transferring guests to Sun Siyam Resorts : Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and Siyam World in Noonu Atoll and Sun Siyam Iru Veli and Sun Siyam Vilu Reef in Dhaalu Atoll.
Named Kanbulo, Kamana (meaning “lady” in Dhivehi, the Maldivian language), and Manikufaanu, in the order they were launched, the luxury seaplanes feature bespoke exteriors adorned with intricate Maldivian patterns.
Kamana, the first seaplane in the fleet was launched on May 2022.
Manikufaanu joined the fleet at the beginning of November 2024, making it the third seaplane in Sun Siyam Resorts’ fleet.
The Inspiration behind the design
Their patterns beautifully draw inspiration from traditional Maldivian elements.
While maintaining TMA’s signature 15-seat layout, their designs are inspired by 3 key traditional elements such as the Maldivian lacquer work called Liyelaa Jehun elegantly showcased on the aircraft tails and noses,
the Libaas, the traditional dress worn by Maldivian women and the Fattaru Bai, the traditional Maldivian women’s jewelry on their fuselage.

What makes these seaplanes even more special is the creative touch of local artists from Sun Siyam Resorts, who transformed the vision into reality. Their efforts reflect authentic Maldivian artistry, ensuring every detail pays homage to the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

- Six Senses Laamu: Their seaplane features a striking turtle-inspired design, celebrating the marine life surrounding the resort and the importance of conservation.
- Four Seasons: Both of their seaplanes showcase designs inspired by Maldives tropical fish, with vibrant patterns and colors reminiscent of the Maldives’ underwater world, connecting guests to the marine paradise they are about to explore.
Four Seasons Maldives first seaplane is inpired by a Triggerfish and the second by a Boxfish.
