Maldives Resorts : The Good, The Overhyped, and The Truly Magical.
Everyone raves about the Maldives… but here’s what they’re not telling you.
Yes, the destination is magical, but not all resorts are created equal. As someone who’s been there, done that, and knows the islands like the back of my hand, I’m here to help you navigate the details and find the perfect fit for your dream getaway.

The Magic of the Maldives
So, you’re Dreaming of the Maldives? Who wouldn’t ?
Picture this : white sand, turquoise lagoons, and that perfect overwater villa.
But here’s the thing : all Maldives resorts have a blue lagoon (it’s kind of their thing) and most have water villas.
The real question is… what else do they have? And with so many resorts to choose from, how do you find the one that’s truly magical ?
To sum it up.
Yes. Many resorts have fish, but not all offer amazing snorkeling spots.
And while water villas are common, are they really as dreamy as they seem ?
Yes. Most resorts have spas, but which ones offer truly special wellness experiences ?
Think about the resort’s condition—is it well-maintained or looking tired ?Let’s talk about the vibe. Yes. Every resort claims to be quiet, but what does that mean ? Is it too quiet, or just right ?
And what about privacy ? Is it more for adults or family-friendly ?
Activities can make a big difference. Are they offering unique things like private beach dinners or underwater wine tastings, or is it just the usual buffet and snorkeling ?
Finally, the big question : beach villa or overwater villa ? Maybe a mix of both ? (Spoiler: It depends on YOU.)
Let’s Dive in.
1. Snorkeling Spots : Not All Are Created Equal
Sure, many resorts have fish, but not all of them have those top-tier snorkeling spots where you’re swimming with mantas, turtles, and technicolor coral gardens. If underwater adventures are your priority, let’s talk about where the real magic happens.
In the Maldives, the closer the reef, the better the magic !
Some resorts are blessed with house reefs just a short swim from the shore, making them perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts. These reefs often wrap around the island, offering vibrant marine life and coral gardens right at your doorstep.
Others feature a mix of reefs and lagoons, providing a balance between calm, sandy areas for relaxation and accessible snorkeling spots for exploration. However, some resorts may lack nearby reefs entirely, requiring boat trips to reach the best underwater sites.

2. Water Villas : Dreamy or Overhyped ?
Yes, many resorts have water villas, but are they truly dreamy ? Are they private ? Or are you waving at your neighbors every time you step onto your deck ?
The experience largely depends on the resort category. Luxury resorts typically offer spacious, well-maintained villas with ample privacy, allowing you to enjoy stunning ocean views alone, without neighbors… However, some mid-range or older resorts may have smaller, closely spaced villas that compromise privacy and comfort. If you’re seeking a truly idyllic overwater experience, it’s essential to research thoroughly and choose a resort that meets your expectations for space, quality, and tranquility.

3. Spas vs. Real Wellness Journeys
Many resorts have a spa, but which ones offer holistic journeys and true wellness approaches that leave you feeling transformed, not just relaxed?
Some luxury resorts offer personalized programs that focus on holistic healing, integrating yoga, fitness, and mindfulness. You can find Ayurvedic retreats with physicians who provide customized treatments and dosha-specific cooking classes.
These resorts go beyond simple relaxation, providing transformative experiences with expert-led programs and medical consultations.
If you seek a journey of self-discovery and revitalization, look for those that prioritize a comprehensive wellness approach.

4. The Resort’s Current State : Fresh or Dated?
What’s the current state of the resort? Is it fresh and well-maintained, or is it showing its age? I’ll help you avoid the “Instagram vs. reality” disappointment.

5. Resort Vibe : Quiet vs. Too Quiet. Finding Your Vibe
All resorts are supposed to be quiet, but how quiet are we talking? Zen-like serenity or “I can hear the family next door splashing in their pool”?
Adults-only or highly adult-oriented resorts offer a different kind of atmosphere—one of tranquility, elegance, and undisturbed relaxation. Even resorts that allow kids but don’t heavily market toward families tend to feel more serene.
Plus, when it comes to luxury in the Maldives, silence truly is golden. The more upscale the resort, the more likely you’ll find yourself in a cocoon of tranquility. High-end properties often boast larger plots of land, allowing for generous spacing between villas. This means you’re less likely to hear your neighbors’ poolside cannonball competition or their heated debate over which Instagram filter to use.

6. Real Privacy : Adults-Only or Family-Friendly ?
What about real privacy ? Are there too many kids around, or is it adults-only bliss? Whether you’re planning a romantic escape or a family adventure, we’ll help you find the right balance.
Good-To-Know : In the Maldives, a resort having a kids’ club doesn’t necessarily mean it will be overrun with families. Some properties cater to adults while merely offering a kids’ club as an option, whereas others truly embrace the family-friendly model. It all depends on the vibe you’re looking for.

7. Activities : Beyond the Buffet
What sets a resort’s activities apart from the rest ?
Is the resort offering unique experiences like private sandbank dinners or underwater wine tastings, or is it just the usual buffet-and-snorkel routine ?
The Maldives is a tropical paradise fueled with exciting activities that will cater to your sense of thrill.
I’ve done many of them for years. Let me guide you through the top ones, including surfing, snorkeling, windsurfing, tennis, yoga, skydiving, freediving and more. I hope this will help you and inspire you to gear up, pack your bags, and embark on a journey to my favorite destination and ex-home, the Maldives, also known as the Island Kingdom.

8. Beach Villa or Overwater Villa ?
Beach villa or overwater villa ? The Maldives dilemma by essence.
What’s truly best? Maybe a mix of both?
Beach Villas are shady oasis.
With palm trees providing ample shade, beach villas offer a cool retreat from the sun while still being just steps away from the soft, white sand. Many beach villas also feature expansive outdoor spaces, including private gardens and pools.
They are perfect for kids, family gatherings or romantic dinners under the stars. However, if you really want ultra privacy, they can come with occasional foliage blocking your ocean view.
Water Villas are ideal for couples.
Water villas generally offer endless views at the ocean – but not always, and direct lagoon access with, according to the island, some snorkeling. However, before you get swept away by the allure of these floating retreats, there are some realities to consider.
Those “endless views” may come with a side of neighborly visibility, as some villas are closer together than you’d expect. Privacy can be limited, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself waving at the couple next door more than at the fish below.
And if your resort is sprawling, be prepared for a workout just to reach dinner. That romantic stroll could feel more like a marathon trek to the buffet!
Finally, if you’re a kid at heart, opt for a water villa with slide, you won’t regret it !

9. Island Hopping : Good Idea or Bad Idea ?
Island hopping in Maldives sounds like a dream, but let’s be real—it can turn into a logistical headache if you’re not careful.
Some resorts require you to transfer all the way back to Male Airport before heading to your next destination. Imagine wasting half a day just shuttling around instead of sipping cocktails by the beach.
Not ideal, right ?
If you really dream of island hopping between 2 or more resorts, the smarter (and less stressful) move is to pick resorts that are close to each other. They will arrange the speedboat transfers between each other, they are used to do so.
Trust me, it’s way better than playing “Maldivian airport relay.” Plus, speedboats are faster, more flexible, and keep you closer to the turquoise waters you came for.
So, before you dive into the island-hopping fantasy, ask yourself :
Do I have the time, energy, and cash for this adventure?
Or would I rather stay put in one dreamy resort and let my stress melt away?
Weigh your priorities—and your wallet—because paradise is best enjoyed when you’re not exhausted or broke !
10. Transfers: Not Always Dreamy
Ah, transfers. That seaplane ride and the exciting speedboat gliding on the sea might look stunning on Instagram, but it’s not always as dreamy as it seems. Long waits, unpredictable schedules, extra costs and bumpy rides can add stress to your journey.
According to your condition ( are you pregnant ? prone to sea sickness ? have back pain ? ), consider these factors when choosing your resort :
Transfers by seaplane
Resort location : Some resorts are only accessible by seaplane.
Arrival time : Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only.
Budget : Seaplane transfers can cost $700+ per person.

Transfers by Speedboat
Speedboat transfers are a more budget-friendly option, they offer greater flexibility with schedules and are often faster for resorts closer to Malé.
The plus : they’re available 24/7 and provide a closer-to-the-water experience.
The downsides : the ride can be bumpy in rough seas, and believe me, it can get quite rough at times. If you’re pregnant or prone to sea sickness, this is an important factor to consider.
Speedboats are ideal if you’re looking to save on transfer costs, but keep in mind that they will still cost you a couple of hundred dollars at a minimum.
