Maldives new tax amendments to impact travelers starting November 2024 until January 2025.
The Maldives government has announced a series of amendments to tax laws, mirroring the changes travelers experienced with the January 2023 GST hike. Ratified on November 5, 2024, these updates—encompassing GST rates, green tax adjustments, and airport fees—mark another significant shift in the cost structure for tourism in the Maldives.
The Maldives will implement 3 new tax changes in 2024 and 2025
Three new tax changes will take effect between late 2024 and mid-2025.
The airport departure fees will be implemented starting December 1, 2024, followed by the Green Tax on January 1, 2025, and the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) on July 1, 2025.
Maldives Airport Fees : Departure Costs Take Off From December 1, 2024
From December 1, 2024, departure tax and airport development fees will rise substantially, particularly for non-economy class travelers. The new structure increases fees significantly, echoing the progressive adjustments initiated last year:
- Economy Class: No change for Maldivians ($12); increase from $30 to $50 for foreigners.
- Business Class: From $60 to $120 for all.
- First Class: From $90 to $240 for all.
- Private Jet: From $120 to $480 for all.
GST Changes : A Gradual Climb Effective July 1, 2025
Effective July 1, 2025, the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) will increase from 16% to 17%. This follows the notable January 2023 hike, when the TGST jumped from 12% to 16%. Additionally, goods and services sold at cafes exclusively serving employees in tourist establishments will now be subject to an 8% GST rate as of November 5, 2024. While the January 2023 changes were aimed at broadening the fiscal base, this latest increase seems to continue the trend of prioritizing fiscal sustainability.
Green Tax : A Double Impact starting January 1, 2025
The green tax is set to double starting January 1, 2025, impacting travelers based on their choice of accommodation:
- Tourist resorts, integrated resorts, resort hotels, tourist vessels, and hotels/guesthouses (50+ rooms on inhabited islands): From $6 to $12 per night.
- Smaller hotels/guesthouses (50 rooms or fewer on inhabited islands): From $3 to $6 per night.
