Maldives new and upcoming resorts in 2020

Maldives Resort developments continue with 10 new Resorts opening in 2020.

This year again, another big number of new luxury resorts opened or will open in the Maldives.

My latest opening list of the New & Upcoming Resorts in Maldives was gathering 21 new resorts in 2019.

In 2020 there will be 10 new resorts in Maldives

• There are 167 Resorts currently operating in 2020 in Maldives.
• There will be about 177 at the end of the year if all new resorts open on time.

New Opening Resorts in Maldives in 2020

About Resort Opening Delays

Most of the resorts announced to open in 2019 have effectively done so.
3 resorts got slightly delayed ( again, it’s a common happening ) : Brennia Maldives and Avani Fares Maldives Resort which were announced to open at the end of 2019.
Brennia finally opened in January 2020 and Avani Fares Maldives Resort will open later this year.
Gran Meliá, announced to open back in the years 2017 and 2018 will finally open in 2020 ( the date is not yet communicated).

Yes, again. Like last year and the ones before…
It was somehow tricky to gather this new Maldives Resort List.
Some resorts are announced to open in 2020 but after investigation, their openings will not happen before 2021 or even 2022.

After (re) checking the plethora of information available, I finally came up with 10 new resorts in 2020 in Maldives.
Let me know if I missed one of them.

Let’s take a closer look at these 10 New and Upcoming Resorts in 2020 in the Maldives

After the opening of new resorts in further and almost virgin Atolls like Thaa and Raa, Vaavu Atoll will also welcome more resorts this year ( Vaavu had only 3 resorts until now – see my resort list ) with the openings of Tolarno Maldives Kunaavashi and Cocogiri Island Resort.

90% of these 10 new resorts are [Ultra] Luxury resorts.
This trend is not new. The best Hotel Brands have developed many luxury properties in the Maldives the past 10 years.

The archipelago will also have more All Inclusive Resorts, sold as such or in option.

Similarly to last year, like Hard Rock Hotel or SAii Lagoon in 2019 which opened at Crossroads Maldives ( first integrated resort project in Maldives ), there will be Resorts built on artificial Islands.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives ( opening scheduled for late 2020 ) will be part of a luxury complex of Islands and outlets at Fari Islands, the second integrated resort project entirely built by man and machines in the country.

Besides integrated resort projects, after seeing some island aerial views and the scheduled numbers and types of villas set to open, I guess other resorts will be built and developed upon land reclamation.

A few words about Fari Islands, the new integrated resort project in Maldives

Fari islands is announced to be the new Maldivian world-class resort experience that will be home to 3 luxurious resorts : the Ritz-Carlton Maldives (2020), Capella Maldives and Patina Maldives, scheduled to open in 2021.

Fari Islands is located in North Male Atoll, at a 50 mns speedboat ride from Male International Airport. The integrated resort project will also feature a Marina, a Beach Club, boutiques and several bars and restaurants.

At the time that I write this article, we are in May 2020, the Covid-19 Pandemic in Maldives has obviously affected scheduled opening dates for all resorts that were supposed to open during the first quarter of the year.
Further delays are expected.
If you see no exact opening date, it means that no information was released.

Brennia Maldives is a 15 hectare island accessible by a scenic 45 minutes seaplane ride from Velana International Airport. Guests who wish to travel by domestic, can alternatively take a 20 minute flight to Ifuru Airport, followed by a short speedboat ride.

Set to open in 2019, Brennia Maldives opened its doors in January 2020.

Developed by a Chinese project manager group, CJL Investment Pvt Ltd, Tolarno Maldives is managed by the Australian hotel management group, La Vie Hotels and Resorts, known for offering boutique properties with arty soul in Australia and Asia.

Located in Vaavu atoll, Tolarno Maldives will be decorated by local Maldivian artists selected by Tolarno Art Advisors.
Designed to welcome both families and couples, Tolarno is announced to offer 72 luxurious accommodation options on the beach and overwater.
The property is designed with nature-oriented influences and hints of all-local crafts blending contemporary material.

Gran Meliá Huravee is located in Thaa Atoll at a 40 mns ride from Male International Airport by speedboat or 15 mns by seaplane.

Initially announced for 2017, the first property of Gran Meliá in Maldives is set to open this year and it looks that it will really happen this time.
However no further details on the date are released.

The Gran Meliá Huravee boasts 96 private villas including 2 presidential suites and 1 private island villa, 3 restaurants, a bar and café, a spa, a leisure and dive centre and several retail shops.

KAGI Maldives Spa Island ( North Male Atoll ). Opening in September 2020

KAGI maldives is located in North Male Atoll at a 60 mns speedboat ride from Male international airport.

KAGI Maldives Spa Island is an Ultra Luxury resort designed for couples or friends looking for relaxation, but also as a wedding or honeymoon location. Scheduled for opening in September 2020, the resort will have a strong focus on Wellness.

Boasting 50 Luxury villas on the beach and overwater, 2 restaurants and 3 bars, KAGI features a beautiful spa, situated above the ocean, offering an holistic approach and treatment concepts tailored to each guest with not only massages and beauty treatments, but also nutrition, exercise and mindfulness. The Spa also features a Spa Corner with healthy, light cuisine and the Yoga Sound Room, in which balancing physical exercises and pleasant sounds are combined.

The resort offers a diving school a fitness center with top equipment and, on request, personal training for sports activities on land.

The resort features a Premium All-Inclusive package as an option.

Address Madivaru Maldives Resort + Spa is located in North Ari Atoll at a 20-minute flight via a seaplane from Male International Airport.

Located on Ethere Madivaru Private Island ( previous home to Banyan Tree Madivaru ), Address Madivaru Maldives Resort + Spa will span 75,000 sqm on the 2.42 sq km island.

Set to open later in 2020, Address Maldivaru will include 80 beach and overwater villas, dedicated spa and water sport, floating restaurants and lounges, over-water fitness facilities, swimming pools and children’s play areas.

The resort is developed by Dubai Company Emaar, Emaar Hospitality, which currently has 11 operational hotels and 3 serviced residences in Dubai with upcoming projects in the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey.

Avani Fares Maldives Resort ( Baa Atoll). Opening late 2020

Avani Fares Maldives Resort is located on Fares Island in Baa Atoll, at 45 mns by seaplane from Male International Airport or 30 mns by domestic flight to Baa airport Dharavandhoo+ 30 mns by speedboat.

Scheduled to open in the last quarter of 2019, Avani Fares Maldives Resort will finally open at the end of this year on the untouched 12,4-hectare Fares island.

Avani Fares Maldives is one of the newest property and first in the Maldives of Avani Hotels, sister brand to Anantara Hotels and Resorts.

Targeting millennial travellers, Avani Fares will be comprised of 200 guest rooms, including standard rooms and a selection of villas.
The company announced that every attention will be given to wellbeing, with decor blending genuine pleasures and modernity, soothing materials, textures and high-tech equipment such as complimentary WiFi, media hub docking stations and 40-inch flat screen TVs.

Avani also promises special Living spaces that will gather the reception, a lounge, a meeting space and several gourmet dining options.

Other services will include a Spa and a Kids club, a large swimming pool and a pool bar

The Chedi Kudavillingili ( North Male Atoll ). Opening late 2020

The Chedi Kudavillingili is located in North Male Atoll at a 25-minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport.

Located on a 1-kilometre island called Kudavillingili, The Chedi Kudavillingili is the first property in Maldives of GHM (General Hotel Management Ltd.), known for conceptualising, developing and operating an exclusive group of top luxury hotels and boutique resorts in Middle East and Europe.

The luxury resort will boast a Maldivian architecture with complementary interior design and landscaping from Singapore and a lighting scheme from the USA.

Set to open late 2020, The Chedi Kudavillingili will feature 36 overwater villas, 63 island-based villas and a central 150-metre-long pool, announced to be one of the longest pool in Maldives after Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi.

The luxury resort will also launch a spa with eight overwater treatment rooms, a beach club and bar, an all-day dining restaurant and Hawkers Stalls featuring four live cooking stations. Recreational opportunities on the island run the gamut from courts for several different sports to surfing and a plethora of on-the-water and underwater pursuits.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands is located in North Male Atoll at a 50 minutes speedboat ride from Male International Airport or in 10 minutes by seaplane.

Set to open late 2020, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands will be part of the four-island Rah Falhu Huraa lagoon development, called Fari Islands, in North Male Atoll.

The Ultra Luxury resort announced to feature 100 land and over water villas ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms all appointed with the ultimate in luxury that defines the Ritz, panoramic views of the ocean, fitted with private pools and covered sundecks.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is scheduled to boast around 5 bars and restaurants including Italian, Chinese and Japanese teppanyaki specialties, a full suite of wellness and recreation facilities for all age groups including an experiential Kids Club, a Recreation Club and a Spa.

The Ritz-Carlton will be another international brand addition to the luxury resorts of the Maldives, joining Marriott’s other properties St Regis Vommuli, W Maldives, Westin Miriandhoo, Sheraton Full Moon and JW Marriott.

Cocogiri Island Resort is located in Vaavu Atoll at 18 minutes by seaplane or 60 minutes by speed boat from Male International airport.

Set to open on December 01st, 2020, Cocogiri Island Resort is a boutique resort featuring 20 water villas and 20 beach villas.
Each water villas are equipped with net over water hammocks, sun decks, loungers, jacuzzi’s (in some villas) and private access to the surrounding reef.

The resort features a spa and wellness centre, a beach restaurant with a range of international cuisine and 1 bar.

Cocogiri features an extensive water sports programme, daily excursions and a dive centre.
