Due to large demand from Hotel Cies and lack of land needed for Maldives housing and industry, the Maldivian government has recently increased authorizations for land reclamation ( including in protected areas of the Maldives).

What is dredging ?
Dredging consists of pumping sand ( in Maldives in the lagoon but can be anywhere ) and reinject tons of it above existing reefs via gigantic pipes to create a sandy land surface.
Several new resorts are now created on artificial islands borned from heavy dredging.
Latest artificial islands in Maldives
The latest artificial islands in Maldives at the time I write this article are :
- Hulhumale, the sister Island of Hulhule, built as an extension to the capital, Male
- CROSSROADS Maldives ( an entertainment and hospitality complex, home to Hard Rock Hotel Maldives )
- Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi
- RIU Atoll
- RIU Palace.
- Fari Islands
There are more new islands on the go ( including domestic airports ).
