The Maldives are renowned for their kaleidoscope of colors that paint the sky during sunset. The transition from vivid blues to warm oranges, pinks, and purples is simply mesmerizing. But why are they so impressive ?

The Maldives are located close to the equatorial line, where Earth is at her widest bulge. This location is the closest to the Sun and its sunlight arrives at a perpendicular (90 degree) angle.
Add this to the high level of humidity in the air and you’re set for the perfect light show.
The Vibrant Colors of Maldives Sunsets, a question of humidity in the air.
As a tropical destination, Maldives air humidity is very high with an average of 80% most of the year and up to 90% during the summer monsoon, the rainy season, or otherwise known as “Halhangu” in Dhivehi.
Air humidity, or the moisture content in the atmosphere, affects how sunlights passes through.
Higher humidity levels mean that there are more water droplets and particles in the air. These particles can scatter and refract sunlight differently, enhancing the scattering effect. As a result, sunsets in areas with higher humidity levels may exhibit more vivid and diverse colors.
The scattering of these molecules plays a significant role in the colors of a sunset. This phenomenon is known as the Rayleigh scattering which is the scattering of light off of the molecules of the air.

When sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, it interacts with air molecules and particles which causes shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue and violet to scatter in all directions, which is responsible for the blue color of the sky during the day.

Green is the last visible colour before the sun sets or rises completely. That famous green color ray is the absolute Grail of sunset lovers. It is extremely rare and very tricky to observe because it only lasts for a few moments, often less than a second.

During sunset, when the sun is closer to the horizon, its light has to pass through a larger portion of the Earth’s atmosphere. This extended path through the atmosphere leads to increased scattering of shorter wavelengths.
The blue color that we see during the day is scattered out of our line of sight, leaving behind the longer wavelengths of light, such as red, orange, and yellow which dominate the colors we perceive during a sunset.
