We are in 2019 and we see, again, another big number of new luxury resorts opened or are on their way to open in the Maldives.

My latest opening list of the New & Upcoming Resorts in Maldives was gathering 21 new resorts in 2018.

2017 was also a fruitful year with 13 new resorts.

2016 had almost the same number.

2019 continues in the same path of opening with 21 new resorts.

If you missed my previous articles on this matter, you need to know something important.
There are many Resorts opening in the Maldives because the previous government has leased a huge number of Islands to investors.

Several islands were leased from the government to become luxury resorts.

New Opening Resorts in Maldives in 2019

About Resort Opening Delays

Last year, several resorts were scheduled to open but will finally operate in 2019.
Delays are quite usual in the Maldives. As I said here before, building an Hotel is a challenge and in Maldives it takes the challenge to all new level.
Consequently some resort openings announced in my 2018 list reappear here in 2019.

According to scheduled announced openings, approximately 21 New Resorts were officially expected to open in 2019.

Lost in Information

There are many information and “opening dates” announced here and there by medias ( legitimate or not ), I found myself with contradictory news, false opening dates, postponed dates, pre-openings or no news at all. Some resorts do not communicate very much on their official opening dates.

It took me time to investigate and search for the latest news and official opening dates, (mostly directly with the resorts latest news and press releases) and came up with a total of 21 new Hotels.

Some of them were announced to open last year but are very very delayed. Again it’s not uncommon, but at this point most of the resorts who are experiencing some delays, release more precise information or clues about their (new) opening dates, which is not the case for some of them.

Let’s have a closer look at all New and Upcoming Resorts in 2019 in Maldives Archipelago

From a Robinson destination in the 80’s / 90’s, the Maldives have definitely turned into the most famous and largest luxury destination in the world.

90% of the new resorts that recently opened or that will open are [ultra] Luxury resorts.
This trend is not new. The best Hotel Brands have developed a plethora of resorts the past 10 years.

In 2019, on a total of 21 new resorts, only 2 are of 3 and 4 star category : Innahura and Rahaa Resorts.
Most of the categories range from 5 Star Luxury to ULTRA Luxury resorts, including All Inclusives.

2019 is the year of a new kind of Island Resort

Do you like your resort built on a Natural or Artificial Island ?

Yes, that’s a new flavor, either you like it or not.
Some of the new resorts that you will see in this 2019 list are built either on a 100% Man-Made totally artificial Island (or partially) or on a natural Island.

*For your information and convenience, I’ve noted if the resort is built or partially built on a artificial Island.

At the time that I write this article, we are in June 2019, some resorts already opened and some others will open sooner or later.

A few information are yet available about Radisson Blu Maldives. The Resort has announced to boast 128 Villas located on the beach, family villas and several luxurious overwater Villas including a premium one. The resort design promises a fusion of contemporary trends and traditional old school Maldivian features. Slated to open in 2018, Pullman Maamutaa is located at 1h30 mns domestic flight from Male international airport and 10 ms by speedboat from Koodoo airport. The resort is built on Maamutaa Island which spans 195,000 square metres. Pullman does not communicate very much about its new property and announces a five-star services and facilities including 80 spacious overwater villas and 40 beach villas, 2 swimming pools, 2 restaurants, a sunset bar perched over the lagoon, a spa and fitness centre, organic gardens, tennis courts, a kids club, a beach playground as well as a dive and water sports centre.
